Information about The Woodlands City:
The Woodlands is a city which was originally founded in 1974 by a man named George P. Mitchell. Ownership was eventually changed for the Woodlands in the 1990s, and became a product of a joint partnership which existed between Crescent Real Estate Equities and Morgan Stanley. In 2004, Crescent sold all of their interest in the Woodlands to a company known as the Rouse Company, which is a development company that was quite familiar at the time with master-planned communities. The Rouse Company went on to be sold in 2004 to a company known as General Growth Properties Incorporated, which was another well known shopping mall developer. The Woodlands is quickly growing up to be quite the formidable city, as there are many companies who are interested in moving to the Woodlands; including Anadarko, Hewitt Associates and even Chicago Bridge and Iron.
The Woodlands can be found situated within the Conroe Independent School District. The primary feeder for this is the Woodlands High School. In early 2004, construction began on the Woodlands College Park High School, which was scheduled to open sometime during 2005. The Woodlands Town Center includes a wide variety of eating facilities and shopping, in addition to a waterway which is reminiscent of River walk which is located in San Antonio. There are constantly new upscale retail outlets and restaurants which are in construction, and the area is even beginning to see new urban residential developments as well.
The Woodlands is located around 30-miles north of the Downtown part of Houston. The Woodlands is famous because it incorporated all of the piney wooded areas around it within both urban and suburban development, which is where The Woodlands got its name. The Woodlands was once named as one of the best of all master-planned communities in the entire country, and is also one of the quickest growing communities in all of Texas.
The Woodlands is the home to a local government agency known as the Woodlands Town Center Improvement District. The Woodlands Town Center Improvement District was created by the Texas Legislature. The Woodlands is also home to the Woodlands waterway, the 4 AAA Diamond Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, the Woodlands Country Club, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The Woodlands Country Club is the only golfing club in the entire nation that is comprised of six different world class courses.
Almost the entire community is located within the extraterritorial jurisdiction or ETJ for Houston, with only a small part of the Woodlands area laying within the corporate limits of Shenandoah county.
