Information about Katy City:
Katy is a city which is located within the great state of Texas. Katy is situated within the Houston, Sugarland and Baytown Metropolitan area. Katy City was named for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, which is commonly known as the Katy Railroad, although it is now a part of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Katy railroad originally ran through Katy city during the 19th century. This Houston suburb's prime attraction is known as the Katy Mills Mall, although another popular attraction is the Forbidden Gardens, which is a unique outdoor museum featuring Chinese history and culture. Many celebrities were born in Katy, Texas, including Renee Zellweger and Renee O'Connor who are actresses, the Country music performer Clint Black, Roger Clemens a baseball player, Kimberly Caldwell an American Idol contestant, and Frank Bielec who is a designer on Trading Spaces.
There are essentially two different informal sections of Katy, according to Katy residents. The first section is Old Katy, also known as Katy Proper. The second section is Katy Area. The actual City of Katy is Katy Proper, and is the area which lies north of the United States Interstate 10. This part of Katy is from the 1970s, which is when Houston's Energy Corridor began to move west, and the development of Katy went along with it.
Information about Katy Area
Katy area, on the other hand, is comprised mainly of large unincorporated sections of both Harris and Fort Bend counties. Katy Area is situated on the eastern part of the City of Katy. This entire area is situated within the Katy Independent school district, and nearly every resident in this area has a postal address within a Katy zip code. There are many newer developments that can be found within the Katy Area, including Grand Lakes and Cinco Ranch. There are also many older developments from the 1970s and 1980s, such as Memorial Parkway or Nottingham Country.
All of the Katy area lies within the extraterritorial jurisdiction or ETJ of Houston, rather than the ETJ of Katy. This means that Katy Area is actually controlled by Houston rather than by Katy, and the city has the right to annex Katy Area in the future. The city of Katy on the other hand, cannot annex Katy Area unless the ETJ for Katy Area is released to Katy. This has been occurring little by little over the span of several years. A recent example of this occurred in 2001, which is when Houston gave up around 400 acres, or around 1.6 square kilometers to the City of Katy so that the Katy Mills Mall and the parking lot surrounding it could be build within the City of Katy in its entirety.
