The Galleria, Texas Apartments

Growth and Redevelopment of the Galleria:

The Galleria is a unique urban development with a multitude of uses, which can be found centrally located within the Uptown District of Houston Texas. The Galleria hosts one of the largest business districts in the entire country, and is located just outside of the I-610's inner beltway. This shopping complex is situated along one of the busiest intersections in the entire country; Post Oak Blvd. and Westheimer Road. You will find three different office towers, two Westin hotels and even a private health club within the Galleria. The Galleria in Houston is the first mall to ever combine an indoor shopping mall with office towers or hotels. It was first developed in 1970 by Gerald Hines. The Galleria was modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II which is located in Milan. There was originally 600,000 square feet worth of retail space. In 1976, an expansion was completed which created the Galleria II, with 360,000 additional square feet of retail space situated on two separate levels. In 1986, the second expansion was completed, adding the Galleria III. The third and final expansion was completed in March of 2003 and added two different department stores; Foley's and a Nordstrom, in addition to around seventy other stores. At this point, there were more than 2.4 million square feet. In April of 2006, renovations for an additional 100,000 square feet of retail space were also completed. This additional space originally belonged to Lord & Taylor, which moved out of the space sometime in 2005.

The Federated Department Stores had plans to close the current Macy's store located in the Galleria, and the Foley's will become a Macy's when the merger with May Department Stores becomes finalized. The Macy's space is speculated to be converted into apartments. The Galleria is the fifth largest of all shopping complexes in the United States, and has been considered to be one of the most prestigious shopping malls in the entire country.

Information about the Galleria

Even greater tourism numbers and a much larger interest by retailers and designers has been sparked by a recent boom in retail. Retailers and designers are more excited than ever to purchase space in this mighty shopping complex. The number of stores and their locations are factors which change consistently, because of the rising rental costs within the Galleria. Although the number of stores is always changing, the average number of stores in the Galleria at any one time is around 375. There are many different upscale designers and boutiques who call the Galleria their home, including Ala Moda, Carroll Paris, Brass Boot, De Gala, Obecca, Grazia, Sara Lasier, Velleriano and many more. There are also many upscale shopping centers surrounding the Galleria, many of which feature local fashion houses and similar stores including Fashion Centre, Uptown Park, Uptown Collection and Highland Village. All of these shopping centers make up the Galleria Shopping District collectively, but this area is more commonly regarded as the Uptown District.

Below a glass atrium within the Galleria you will also find a full-sized ice-skating rink. You will also find more than fifty different restaurants, and specialty food stores as well within the Galleria complex. These restaurants and specialty food stores offer a wide range of prices and service points meaning that there is something for virtually everyone.
